Practical Semantics--Challenges and Uses

Bruce Bargmeyer
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

This presentation covers the practical use of semantics for applications ranging from strategic to routine. It identifies challenges in registering, managing, vetting, and evolving semantics, both for enterprise use and for “community intelligence”. The focus is on potential connections between the semantics found in concept systems, the semantics found in databases, and the semantics found in semantic computing applications, such as the semantic web. It addresses ongoing research efforts and demonstrations of capabilities that meet priority use cases.
